CMOS battery is a small, coin-shaped battery, typically a CR2032 lithium cell, found inside most desktop and laptop computers. Its primary function is to provide continuous power to the Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) memory chip on the computer's motherboard. This CMOS memory stores crucial system settings, including the system's date and time, boot order, and hardware configurations.

When the computer is powered off and unplugged from the main power source, the CMOS battery ensures that these settings are not lost. Without a functioning CMOS battery, the computer would reset these settings to their default values every time it is turned off, requiring the user to reconfigure them each session. This would also result in the system clock always showing the wrong time and date.

The lifespan of a CMOS battery is typically several years, varying depending on usage and environmental factors. Symptoms of a dying or dead CMOS battery often include the computer losing its date and time settings, the BIOS reporting a battery error during startup, or the computer failing to boot properly due to incorrect hardware configurations. Replacing a CMOS battery is generally a straightforward process, usually involving locating the battery on the motherboard and carefully removing and inserting the new coin cell.
