CHNelementaire refers to the elemental analysis of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen in a sample, commonly abbreviated CHN. It is a standard characterization method in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science, used to determine the composition of a substance, verify its empirical formula, and support assessments of purity.

The measurement is typically carried out with a CHN analyzer. A small, precisely weighed portion of material is combusted in a furnace with excess oxygen. During combustion, carbon forms carbon dioxide, hydrogen forms water, and nitrogen forms nitrogen gases. The evolving gases are carried by a carrier gas to detectors that quantify CO2, H2O, and N2 (or NOx). The instrument reports the weight percentages of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen, which can be converted into an empirical formula. Oxygen content is not measured directly and is usually inferred by difference from 100%.

CHN analysis has broad applications, including verification of pharmaceutical intermediates and final products, evaluation of polymers and plastics, and quality control in food and cosmetic industries. It often serves alongside other analyses, such as CHNS (which includes sulfur) or techniques that assess oxygen content, to provide a fuller elemental profile of a material.

Limitations include the need for homogeneous, dry samples and the potential for inorganic salts or moisture to skew results. Elements not detected by CHN (such as sulfur, halogens, or metals) can affect combustion efficiency or be measured separately. Despite these constraints, CHNelementaire remains a fundamental, widely used tool for confirming composition and supporting structural interpretation in organic and commercial contexts.
