CHDOs
CHDO stands for Community Development Corporation. These are typically non-profit organizations that operate at a local level and are dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents in low-income communities. CHDOs work by undertaking various community development activities, which can include a wide range of initiatives. A primary focus for many CHDOs is the development and preservation of affordable housing. This can involve constructing new housing units, rehabilitating existing properties, or providing rental assistance and homeownership opportunities. Beyond housing, CHDOs often engage in economic development projects, such as supporting local businesses, creating job training programs, or revitalizing commercial districts. They may also address community needs through initiatives related to social services, education, or public spaces. The "CHDO" designation is a specific certification awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). To receive this certification, an organization must meet certain criteria, including having a primary mission of serving low-income communities, being controlled by residents of the community it serves, and being a private non-profit organization. This certification can enable CHDOs to access specific federal funding opportunities and participate in certain HUD programs.
