CAPTAS4

CAPTAS4 is a towed array sonar system developed by Thales for anti-submarine warfare. It marks the fourth generation in the CAPTAS family and is designed to provide long-range detection and tracking through a flexible, high-sensitivity hydrophone array deployed behind a host ship. The system integrates a long towed array, a deployment and handling system, and surface electronics linked by a high-bandwidth fiber-optic interface to the ship's combat management system.

CAPTAS4 employs variable-depth deployment to optimize performance in different depths and thermal layers, helping to exploit acoustic propagation in variable sea states. It supports multiple modes, including passive listening across a broad frequency band, active sonar with low-probability-of-intercept features, and high-resolution beamforming for target localization. Advanced digital signal processing, self-noise reduction, and clutter rejection help improve detection in noisy environments, while synthetic aperture techniques enhance range and resolution.

The system is designed for scalability and interoperability, allowing integration on a range of surface combatants and submarines and compatibility with modern combat-management architectures. It has been procured by multiple navies and integrated on new-build and mid-life upgrade programs, reflecting its role as a flexible, long-range ASW sensor.

CAPTAS4 is part of the CAPTAS family of towed-array systems, which are used to extend a platform’s sensing reach and provide integrated ASW capabilities alongside hull-mounted sonars and airborne assets.
