C6H5OCH3, also known as anisole or methoxybenzene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H5OCH3. It is an aromatic ether, consisting of a phenyl group (C6H5) bonded to a methoxy group (OCH3). Anisole is a colorless liquid at room temperature with a distinct, pleasant odor often described as resembling aniseed. Its molecular weight is approximately 108.14 g/mol.

Anisole is sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in most organic solvents, such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and benzene. It has a relatively low melting point of around -37 degrees Celsius and a boiling point of approximately 154 degrees Celsius. Chemically, anisole is quite stable. The presence of the electron-donating methoxy group activates the benzene ring towards electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions, though it is less reactive than phenol. Common reactions include halogenation, nitration, and Friedel-Crafts acylation, which typically occur at the ortho and para positions of the benzene ring.

Industrially, anisole is primarily produced by the Williamson ether synthesis, reacting sodium phenoxide with methyl halides or dimethyl sulfate. It finds applications as a solvent, particularly for resins and lacquers, and as an intermediate in the synthesis of perfumes, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. Its characteristic scent also leads to its use as a fragrance ingredient in various consumer products. Anisole can be found naturally in some plants, such as fennel and anise.
