The C64x was envisioned to be powered by an Intel Atom dual-core processor and include 2GB of RAM, a 16GB SSD, and a 1.4GHz processor. It was also planned to have a built-in keyboard with a retro design and feature ports such as HDMI, USB, and Ethernet. The operating system was expected to be a Linux-based distribution, with the ability to run certain C64 emulators. The goal was to offer a nostalgic computing experience with modern capabilities, appealing to both long-time Commodore fans and those interested in retro-computing.

Despite significant pre-release marketing and anticipation, the C64x ultimately failed to materialize. The reasons for its cancellation are not fully clear, but reports suggest financial difficulties and internal issues within Commodore USA played a significant role.
