Bölcsészet

Bölcsészet is the Hungarian term for the humanities, a field of study and research focused on human culture, language, thought, history, and creative expression. It encompasses disciplines such as philology, literature, history, philosophy, archaeology, ethnology, art history, linguistics, religious studies, and cultural studies. In Hungarian higher education, bölcsészet is typically organized under faculties of humanities (e.g., Bölcsészettudományi Kar).

The word derives from bölcs (wise) with the suffix -észet, forming the idea of “the science or study of wisdom.” It reflects the European liberal-arts tradition known as studia humanitatis, emphasizing interpretation, critical thinking, textual analysis, and cultural understanding rather than natural science.

Education and career paths in bölcsészet typically lead to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
