Byggnadsskydd describes the protection of buildings and their occupants, contents, and operations against a range of threats and hazards. The concept encompasses both physical protection of the structure and preventive measures that reduce vulnerability, including fire safety, protection against water damage, burglary and vandalism, and resilience against natural or man-made hazards. It applies to new constructions as well as existing buildings and can cover residential, commercial, and critical infrastructure facilities.

Common measures include structural reinforcement for strength and impact resistance, fire protection systems, safe means of egress, flood barriers, wind and seismic resistance, protective glazing and reinforced doors, surveillance, access control, and alarm systems. For facilities deemed critical or sensitive, additional measures such as secure rooms, backup power, redundant communications, and security zoning may be used. In addition to physical measures, byggnadsskydd includes organizational aspects such as risk assessments, security procedures, maintenance, and regular testing of safety systems.

Implementation is guided by national and local codes, standards, and guidance from public authorities, as well as internal risk management policies of property owners and operators. The aim is to improve safety for occupants, minimize potential property damage, protect important assets, and ensure continuity of operations during and after disruptive events.
