Burao

Burao, also spelled Burco, is a city in Somaliland and the capital of the Togdheer region. It is located in the north-central part of the country and lies on the major road linking Hargeisa to Berbera, making it a regional commercial hub.

Historically a market town on caravan routes, Burao grew into an administrative center during the colonial and post-colonial periods. Today it serves as a focal point for livestock trading, retail commerce, and public services for the surrounding pastoralist districts.

Economy and infrastructure: The local economy centers on livestock trading, hides, wool, and other goods exchanged at daily and weekly markets. The city contains schools, healthcare facilities, and administrative offices, and is connected to other towns by regional roads. Infrastructure development, including education and utilities, has continued alongside broader Somaliland growth.

Demographics and culture: The population is predominantly Somali, with Isaaq as the major clan family in Togdheer. Social life centers on markets and mosques, with traditional poetry and music contributing to cultural events around markets and religious occasions.

Climate: Burao has a hot, semi-arid climate with a long dry season and a shorter rainy period. Temperatures are high throughout the year, and rainfall is irregular, making livestock herding a key livelihood for many residents.
