Bulkstroming

Bulkstroming is a term used in engineering and physical sciences to describe the large-scale, organized transport of material within a medium, driven by bulk forces such as pressure gradients, gravity, or external fields. It denotes net advective motion of constituents and contrasts with diffusion, which is driven by random molecular motion. The term is used in several domains, including fluid dynamics, sediment transport, and microfluidics, but it does not have a single universally accepted definition.

Mechanisms and contexts: Bulkstroming arises when bulk forces generate a persistent flow pattern that transports substances as a whole. Examples include pressure-driven flows in pipes and channels, natural convection due to temperature or density differences, sediment transport in rivers, and acoustically or electromagnetically driven flows in specialized devices. In porous media, bulkstroming is described at the Darcy scale and governs many hydrogeological and environmental processes.

Modeling: In continuum models, bulkstroming is represented by the velocity field solving the Navier–Stokes equations or their simplifications (Stokes flow for low Reynolds numbers, Darcy's law in porous media), coupled with advection–diffusion equations for transported species. Turbulent bulkstroming is treated with Reynolds-averaged equations or large-eddy simulations. Multiscale approaches are often needed to connect pore-scale processes to macroscopic transport.

Applications: The concept informs the design of piping and pumping systems, microfluidic devices for sample handling, environmental engineering for contaminant transport, and industrial mixing and materials processing.

Challenges: Measuring and predicting bulkstroming can be difficult due to scale separation, complex boundary conditions, and heterogeneity of media. Distinguishing bulk motion from localized diffusion requires careful experimental and modeling approaches.
