Bränsleförhållanden, or fuel conditions, refers to the precise ratio of fuel to air within an internal combustion engine. This ratio is critical for efficient and complete combustion. The ideal stoichiometric ratio, often represented as 14.7:1 for gasoline, means that 14.7 parts of air are mixed with 1 part of fuel by mass. Deviating from this ideal can lead to various outcomes.

A rich fuel condition, where there is more fuel than required for complete combustion (a ratio lower than stoichiometric), results in incomplete burning of the fuel. This can lead to reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and higher emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Conversely, a lean fuel condition, with less fuel than required (a ratio higher than stoichiometric), means there is excess air. While this can improve fuel economy and reduce CO emissions, excessively lean conditions can cause misfires, increased NOx emissions, and potentially damage the engine due to higher combustion temperatures.

Modern engines utilize sophisticated systems, such as oxygen sensors and engine control units (ECUs), to constantly monitor and adjust the fuel-air ratio, aiming to maintain optimal conditions for performance, emissions control, and fuel efficiency under varying operating loads and environmental factors.
