1471 was a pivotal year in the Wars of the Roses, a dynastic conflict in England between the Houses of York and Lancaster. After a period of instability, Edward IV, a Yorkist king, regained the throne in 1471. The year featured two major battles: the Battle of Barnet on 14 April, where Edward IV defeated the Lancastrians and Warwick the Kingmaker was killed; and the Battle of Tewkesbury on 4 May, in which the Yorkists defeated the Lancastrians again, and Prince Edward, son of Henry VI, was killed. Following these defeats, Henry VI was captured and died later in May 1471 while imprisoned in the Tower of London, effectively ending the main Lancastrian line’s leadership and leaving Edward IV in control of the kingdom.
