Brystvævets refers to the tissue that makes up the breast. It is primarily composed of glandular tissue, which produces milk, and connective tissue, which provides support. Adipose tissue, or fat, also makes up a significant portion of the breast. The proportion of these tissues varies greatly among individuals and changes throughout a woman's life due to hormonal influences, such as during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

The glandular tissue is organized into lobes, and each lobe contains lobules where milk is produced. These lobes are drained by ducts that eventually lead to the nipple. The connective tissue, including ligaments, helps to maintain the breast's shape and position. The presence and distribution of fat within the breast contribute to its overall size and feel.

Changes in brystvævets can be a cause for concern and are often evaluated through medical examinations and imaging techniques like mammography. Understanding the normal composition and variations of breast tissue is crucial for identifying any abnormalities. Hormonal fluctuations significantly impact breast tissue, leading to cyclical changes in tenderness and density. For instance, breasts can become more tender and denser in the week before menstruation. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the glandular tissue undergoes significant development to facilitate milk production. As women approach menopause, hormonal changes cause a gradual decrease in glandular tissue and an increase in fat, leading to a reduction in breast density.
