BrunswickWolfenbüttel, often referred to as the unified municipality, was a short-lived administrative entity in Lower Saxony, Germany. It was formed on July 1, 1974, through the merger of the city of Wolfenbüttel and several surrounding municipalities. The primary goal of this consolidation was to streamline local administration and improve the provision of public services across a broader geographical area.

The creation of BrunswickWolfenbüttel was part of a wider administrative reform in Lower Saxony aimed at creating more efficient and effective municipal structures. The new entity encompassed the core urban area of Wolfenbüttel along with its immediate rural hinterland. However, the name and the unified structure proved to be unpopular and were met with resistance from some of the constituent communities.

Concerns were raised about the loss of local identity and the perceived dominance of the city of Wolfenbüttel within the new municipality. This discontent, coupled with ongoing administrative challenges, led to a reconsideration of the merger.

Ultimately, the administrative experiment of BrunswickWolfenbüttel was brief. On March 1, 1977, less than three years after its formation, the unified municipality was dissolved. Wolfenbüttel was re-established as an independent city, and the surrounding areas were reorganized into different municipal structures, often reverting to pre-merger boundaries or forming new, smaller associations.
