Broadlands

Broadlands is a historic country house located near Romsey in Hampshire, England. It is the ancestral home of the Palmer family, Earls of Selborne, and has been in the family since the 18th century. The house itself is a significant example of Palladian architecture, with later additions and alterations.

The estate's origins date back to the medieval period, but it was during the ownership of Henry Temple, 2nd Viscount Palmerston, in the 1760s, that the current house was largely constructed by architect Capability Brown. Brown also landscaped the surrounding parkland, creating the picturesque setting that Broadlands is known for today. Later, the house was further developed by architects such as Henry Holland and Anthony Salvin.

Broadlands is perhaps most famously associated with its time as the home of Lord Mountbatten of Burma, a distinguished military leader and statesman, and his wife Edwina Mountbatten. They hosted many prominent guests at Broadlands, including members of the Royal Family and political figures. Following Lord Mountbatten's death, the house was inherited by his daughter, Patricia, Countess Mountbatten of Burma.

Today, Broadlands is a popular visitor attraction, offering guided tours of the house and its grounds. Visitors can explore the staterooms, learn about the history of the family and its notable residents, and enjoy the extensive gardens and parkland. The house continues to be a private residence, with parts of it remaining a family home. It also serves as a venue for events and conferences.
