Brjóstverkjum, or chest pain, is a symptom that can arise from a variety of causes, ranging from mild and non-life-threatening to severe and indicative of a medical emergency. It is characterized by discomfort, pressure, squeezing, or aching felt in the chest area. The exact sensation, location, and duration of chest pain can vary significantly depending on its origin.

Cardiac causes are often the most concerning. These can include angina, which is chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, or myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack, which occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked, causing damage to the heart muscle. Other heart-related conditions like pericarditis (inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart) or aortic dissection (a tear in the major artery carrying blood from the heart) can also manifest as chest pain.

Non-cardiac causes are also frequent. The digestive system can be implicated, with conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or heartburn, being a common culprit, causing a burning sensation that can be mistaken for heart pain. Esophageal spasms can also create chest discomfort. Respiratory issues like pneumonia, pleurisy (inflammation of the lining of the lungs), or a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs) are serious conditions that can present with chest pain, often accompanied by shortness of breath or coughing. Musculoskeletal pain, arising from strained chest muscles, fractured ribs, or costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting ribs to the breastbone), is another possibility. Anxiety and panic attacks can also trigger chest pain, mimicking cardiac symptoms.
