Bricklin

The Bricklin was a sports car produced from 1974 to 1976 by General Vehicle Corporation. The company was founded by Malcolm Bricklin, who had previously been involved in the automotive industry with a failed attempt to import Subarus. The Bricklin SV-1, its full name, was designed as a unique and stylish vehicle with a distinctive gull-wing door system.

Construction of the Bricklin SV-1 featured a fiberglass body mounted on a steel perimeter frame. This design was intended to provide a safe and durable vehicle, with the "SV" in its name standing for "Safety Vehicle." The car was powered by a Ford 351 cubic inch V8 engine in 1974, followed by a larger AMC 360 cubic inch V8 for the 1975 and 1976 model years. A manual transmission was available, but an automatic transmission was more common.

Despite its innovative features and striking appearance, the Bricklin faced significant challenges. Production was plagued by quality control issues and manufacturing difficulties. The company struggled with financial problems, leading to its eventual bankruptcy in 1975. Production continued briefly under new ownership until 1976. In total, approximately 2,900 Bricklin SV-1s were produced. Today, the Bricklin is considered a collector's item, remembered for its ambitious design and unusual history.
