Breukachtige

Breukachtige, also known as *Pseudospondylus variegatus*, is a species of marine fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, commonly referred to as scorpionfish or rockfish. This species is native to the coastal waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean, including the Mediterranean Sea, where it is often found in rocky or coral reef environments.

The breukachtige is characterized by its elongated body, with a distinctive, somewhat flattened shape that allows it to blend seamlessly into its surroundings. Its coloration varies, often featuring shades of brown, gray, or green with irregular patterns, which provide excellent camouflage among rocks and algae. The fish typically reaches a length of around 20 to 30 centimeters, though larger specimens have been recorded.

This species is known for its venomous spines, particularly along its dorsal and pectoral fins, which can deliver painful stings if provoked. The venom is not usually lethal to humans but can cause severe pain, swelling, and discomfort. As a result, caution is advised when handling or encountering this fish.

Breukachtige is an opportunistic predator, feeding primarily on small fish, crustaceans, and invertebrates. It is an important part of its ecosystem, helping to regulate populations of smaller marine organisms. Due to its adaptability and widespread distribution, the species is not currently considered threatened, though habitat degradation and overfishing in some regions may pose future risks.

In the Mediterranean, the breukachtige is occasionally encountered by divers and anglers, though it is not a common target species. Its presence is often a sign of a healthy reef environment, as it thrives in areas with abundant cover and prey. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining healthy marine habitats to support populations of this and other reef-associated species.
