Bretonnia

Bretonnia is a fictional feudal kingdom featured in the Warhammer Fantasy setting. It is a land inspired by medieval Arthurian legends, characterized by a chivalrous knightly class, a superstitious peasantry, and a deep-seated belief in the Lady of the Lake. The Bretonnian social structure is rigidly hierarchical, with a powerful nobility of dukes, barons, and lords who rule over their lands and command their knights. These knights are the famed cavalry of Bretonnia, sworn to uphold the Code of Chivalry, protect the weak, and smite the unchivalrous.

Below the nobility are the freeholders, the yeomen and prosperous peasants who own land. The vast majority of Bretonnia's population, however, are serfs, bound to the land and their lords, living lives of hardship and toil. Religion plays a significant role, with a strong emphasis on the worship of the Lady of the Lake, who bestows divine blessings upon her chosen knights. Superstition and folk magic are also prevalent, with many fearing dark forces and the corrupting influence of Chaos.

The kingdom is constantly beset by threats, both internal and external. Raiders from the northern lands, greenskin hordes, beastmen, and the insidious machinations of the Skaven are common dangers. Bretonnia's knights are renowned for their valor and dedication, often engaging in desperate battles to defend their homeland and uphold their oaths. Despite its outward appearance of chivalry, Bretonnia also grapples with internal strife, such as feuds between noble houses and the persistent social inequalities that plague its peasantry. The overall theme of Bretonnia is a struggle to maintain an idealized vision of knighthood and faith in a brutal and unforgiving world.
