Breakevenanalyysissä, known in English as break-even analysis, is a financial tool used to determine the point at which a business's total revenue equals its total costs. At this point, the business is neither making a profit nor incurring a loss. Understanding the break-even point is crucial for businesses to assess their financial viability and make informed decisions regarding pricing, production levels, and cost management.

The analysis involves categorizing costs into fixed costs and variable costs. Fixed costs are expenses that do not change with the volume of production or sales, such as rent, salaries, and insurance. Variable costs, on the other hand, fluctuate directly with the level of output, including raw materials, direct labor, and sales commissions. The break-even point can be calculated using a formula. The break-even point in units is found by dividing total fixed costs by the contribution margin per unit, which is the selling price per unit minus the variable cost per unit. Alternatively, the break-even point in sales revenue is calculated by dividing total fixed costs by the contribution margin ratio, which is the contribution margin per unit divided by the selling price per unit.

By identifying the break-even point, businesses can set sales targets and understand the minimum revenue required to cover all expenses.
