Brandschutz, or fire protection, refers to the measures and practices designed to prevent fires, limit their spread, and protect people, property, and the environment. It combines preventive design, detection, suppression, and safe evacuation.

Passive fire protection includes fire-resistant construction, compartmentation, fire-rated walls and doors, and seals to slow heat and flame. Active fire protection includes automatic fire detection and alarm systems, smoke control, and fixed extinguishing systems such as sprinklers, as well as portable extinguishers.

Fire protection planning involves risk assessment, building classification, and compliance with standards and regulations. In many jurisdictions, fire resistance ratings for structures and early-warning systems are specified by national or European standards (for example EN 13501 for fire resistance, EN 54 for detection and alarm). Codes guide design, installation, inspection, and maintenance.

The goal is to ensure safe evacuation, protect occupants, and facilitate firefighting operations. This includes clearly marked escape routes, emergency lighting, signage, and access for fire services.

Ongoing maintenance and testing are required to keep systems functional. Plans and measures are updated after changes in use, occupancy, or regulations, with regular drills and documentation.
