BrabantWallon

Brabant Wallon, known in Dutch as Waals-Brabant and in French as Brabant wallon, is a province of the Walloon Region in Belgium. It is located in the central part of the country, just south of the Brussels-Capital Region, and is bordered by the provinces of Flemish Brabant to the north and Hainaut and Namur to the west and southeast. The provincial capital is Nivelles.

The province was created in 1995 as part of the constitutional reform that split the historic Province of Brabant into Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant, with Brussels remaining a separate region. Brabant Wallon covers urban, suburban and rural areas, reflecting its location on the frontier between the Brussels metropolitan area and southern Belgium.

Brabant Wallon includes several notable towns and municipalities, such as Nivelles (the capital), Wavre, Waterloo, Braine-l’Alleud, Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, Genappe and Tubize. The city of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve hosts the main campus of the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain). The province is known for historical sites, including the Waterloo battlefield near Waterloo and Braine-l’Alleud, as well as green spaces such as parts of the Sonian Forest.

Economically, Brabant Wallon combines services, education, research and light industry, with close links to Brussels supporting commuting, business, and logistics activities. The population is predominantly French-speaking, with growing cultural diversity and a mix of urban and rural communities. The region is governed as part of the Walloon Region and maintains its own provincial council and governor.
