Wavre

Wavre is a municipality in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant. It is situated in the central part of Belgium, about 20 to 30 kilometers southeast of Brussels, and forms part of the Brussels metropolitan area. The municipality includes the towns of Wavre proper, Bierges and Limal.

The area has a long history dating back to medieval times. It developed as an agricultural community before expanding in the 19th and 20th centuries with the arrival of rail and road networks, contributing to its growth as a suburban town for Brussels and nearby cities.

The best-known site in the municipality is Walibi Belgium, a large amusement park located in the village of Bierges, which attracts visitors from across Belgium and neighboring countries. The local economy today includes services, retail, and light industry, supporting a residential population.

Wavre is connected to the regional road network and enjoys access to major routes toward Brussels, Louvain-la-Neuve and Charleroi. Public transport is provided by the national railway company and bus services. The municipality is subdivided into three deelgemeenten: Wavre, Bierges, and Limal.

Wavre hosts local festivals and markets characteristic of Walloon Brabant towns, and it maintains several schools, cultural associations, and sports clubs. The governance is handled by a municipal council elected by residents.
