Bouyage

Bouyage is a term that refers to the act or process of marking a waterway with buoys. Buoys are floating markers, often anchored to the seabed, that serve as navigational aids for mariners. They are used to indicate channels, hazards, mooring areas, and other important features of a waterway. The system of buoys used in a particular area is known as a buoyage system.

Different types of buoys exist, each with a specific shape, color, and light configuration to convey particular information. For instance, in the Lateral Buoyage System, red buoys typically mark the right side of a channel when entering from the sea, while green buoys mark the left side. Cardinal buoys, on the other hand, indicate the direction of safe water relative to the buoy. Special buoys, often yellow, are used to mark special areas such as anchorages, spoil grounds, or military exercise zones.

The purpose of bouyage is to enhance maritime safety by providing clear and consistent guidance to vessels. Properly maintained and understood bouyage systems help prevent collisions, groundings, and other accidents. International agreements, such as those established by the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), aim to standardize bouyage systems worldwide, although regional variations may still exist. The placement and maintenance of buoys are typically the responsibility of national maritime authorities.
