Boutonnière

A boutonnière is a floral decoration worn in the lapel buttonhole of a suit or jacket. The term comes from French, literally meaning “buttonhole flower.” It refers to a small bloom or bud, often accompanied by a bit of greenery, that is secured in the buttonhole with a pin or clip.

Wearing and arrangement. The boutonnière is traditionally worn on the left lapel, near the heart, and is most common at formal occasions such as weddings, proms, and other ceremonies. A boutonnière is typically a single flower or a compact cluster, designed to be lightweight and easily secured to the fabric. The choice of flower and color is usually coordinated with the event’s color scheme or the bride’s bouquet.

Care and maintenance. Fresh boutonnières require careful handling. Keep them cool before use, cut the stems at an angle, and wrap the stems with floral tape or a small band of ribbon for stability. Store with a little water or in a refrigerated space to maintain freshness. When worn, a boutonnière should be pinned securely to prevent shifting.

Variations and etiquette. In weddings, groom and groomsmen commonly wear boutonnières, while corsages are often worn by brides and female attendants. Artificial boutonnières are available for longer-lasting use, while some modern styles experiment with non-floral materials or seasonal elements. The boutonnière remains a traditional accessory that signals formality and complements the overall attire.
