Bothdepends is a term used in software engineering to describe a bidirectional dependency relationship between two or more software components, in which each unit requires the other to function. The concept is most often discussed in the context of modular design and dependency management, where mutual reliance can create tight coupling and complicate maintenance.

The word combines both and depends to signal that the dependency relation operates in both directions rather than unidirectionally. While not a formal design principle, the notion is used to identify and discuss coupling patterns that deserve attention during architecture reviews.

Characteristics of a bothdepends scenario include mutual imports, shared state, or synchronous calls that require both sides to be present at compile time or runtime. It can appear as circular imports, cross-module method calls, or tightly bound component interfaces that reference each other extensively.

Practical implications include difficulties in testing, debugging, and changing one component without affecting the other. Build order can become fragile, and deployment may require coordinated updates. As a result, bothdepends is often treated as a design smell that warrants refactoring.

Common mitigation strategies include introducing stable abstractions, applying the dependency inversion principle, extracting a new interface or mediator, and using inversion of control or dependency injection to decouple components while preserving collaboration.
