BorkouEnnediTama

BorkouEnnediTama is a large administrative region in northern Chad. It was created in 2008 by dividing the former Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Prefecture into three separate regions: Borkou, Ennedi-Ouest, and Ennedi-Est. The current administrative structure, however, re-established a consolidated region named BorkouEnnediTama. This vast territory is characterized by arid and semi-arid desert landscapes, including the iconic Ennedi Plateau, known for its unique rock formations and ancient rock art.

The region is sparsely populated, with nomadic and semi-nomadic communities forming the majority of its inhabitants. These communities are primarily engaged in pastoralism, herding camels, goats, and sheep. The economy is largely subsistence-based, with limited infrastructure and development. Access to water is a critical challenge, and life often revolves around oases and water sources.

Historically, BorkouEnnediTama has been a transit route for trans-Saharan trade and a region of strategic importance. The Ennedi Plateau, in particular, holds significant archaeological and paleontological value, with evidence of prehistoric human occupation and diverse fauna. The region faces ongoing challenges related to climate change, resource scarcity, and providing essential services like education and healthcare to its dispersed population. Its remote location and challenging environment contribute to its unique cultural heritage and way of life.
