Boolbool

Boolbool is a fictional mammal described in the Atlas of Veridia, a world-building project associated with the Veridian archipelago. It is depicted as a small, nocturnal species that resembles a cross between a possum and a small wallaby, with soft gray-brown fur, a rounded snout, large ears, and a prehensile tail.

Adults typically measure 28–40 cm in body length, with tails of 25–40 cm, and they can weigh between 0.6 and 1.4 kilograms. Boolbool is primarily arboreal, inhabiting dense understory, mangrove edges, and secondary forests where it makes extendable nests in hollow logs or forked branches.

Diurnal activity is limited, with most foraging occurring after dusk for fruit, seeds, nectar, and insects. Socially, Boolbool is mostly solitary, coming together briefly for mating; individuals communicate with soft vocalizations and tail-flag movements.

Reproduction is seasonal, with a single or twin young per litter; the young are carried in a pouch for several weeks, then ride on the mother's back during weaning, which lasts a few months.

Conservation-wise, the Boolbool is described as a species of least concern in the Atlas, though local populations may be affected by habitat disturbance and introduced predators. Within Veridian folklore, Boolbool is celebrated as a symbol of night and resilience, appearing in stories to warn children about forest safety.
