Bonders

Bonder is a term used in several industries to describe a device, person, or substance involved in joining two surfaces or components. In common usage, the word most often refers to equipment that forms electrical or mechanical bonds in manufacturing, particularly in electronics and semiconductor packaging. It can also describe a person who performs bonding tasks or, more broadly, a bonding agent or adhesive.

In electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, bonders are specialized machines that create connections between components. The main types include wire bonders, which form connections by threading a fine metal wire between pads; die bonders, which attach semiconductor dice to substrates with epoxy or solder; and flip-chip bonders, which place and connect chips face-down to a substrate using solder bumps. Within these categories, bonding methods such as ultrasonic, thermocompression, and thermosonic bonding are used depending on the materials and performance requirements. Commonly used wires are gold or copper, chosen for conductivity and compatibility with the bond process. Bonding occurs in controlled environments, often cleanrooms, to prevent contamination and ensure reliability.

Beyond electronics, the term bonder can refer to a bonding agent or binder used to join materials in construction, woodworking, textiles, or adhesives markets. In dentistry and orthodontics, bonders or bonding agents are materials that prepare enamel and secure restorative or orthodontic components. In social or psychological contexts, “bonders” might describe individuals who form strong interpersonal or group bonds, though this usage is less technical.
