Boheemse

Boheemse is an adjective used in Dutch to denote things related to Bohemia, a historic region in central Europe. Bohemia is largely located in the western part of the present-day Czech Republic and has Prague as its most prominent city. The term derives from the Latin name Boiohaemum, which historically connected the region to the early Celtic inhabitants (the Boii) and later to its medieval Czech development.

Geographically, Bohemia occupies a central European plain and upland landscape, part of the Bohemian Massif. The Vltava (Moldau) and Elbe (Labe) river basins are among the major watersheds shaping the region. Today, Bohemia forms the western half of the Czech Republic, with a long urban tradition centered on Prague and several other historic towns.

Historically, Bohemia was the core of the medieval Kingdom of Bohemia and later a crown land within the Holy Roman Empire. It became a central part of the Habsburg Monarchy and, after 1918, one of the historic lands of Czechoslovakia. Since 1993, it is part of the Czech Republic. The term Boheemse is commonly used to describe cultural or historical aspects associated with that region, such as Boheemse kunst (Bohemian art) or Boheemse literatuur.

Culturally, Bohemia has contributed to Czech language, folklore, architecture, music, and literary traditions. In broader European usage, the word Bohemian (Boheemse in Dutch) has also come to describe a nonconformist or artistic lifestyle, a sense in which the term has influenced adjacent regions and periods.
