Boatcharter refers to the practice of renting a boat for a defined period for private use. Charters are typically arranged through specialist charter companies, brokers, or online platforms and can involve a wide range of vessel types, from sailing yachts and motor yachts to catamarans and fishing boats. The service may include a crew, provisioning, and an itinerary planned with the owner or operator.

There are several common charter formats. Bareboat charters give the renter exclusive use of the vessel without a crew, with the renter responsible for operating the boat and meeting any licensing or qualification requirements. Crewed charters provide a professional crew, and often include catering, itinerary planning, and sometimes additional services. Charters can be short-term, such as day trips, or longer, such as week-long or multi-week voyages, and may cover a fixed route or provide flexible itineraries.

Booking and terms. A charter is secured through a contract that specifies the vessel, dates, inclusions and exclusions, pricing, payment schedule, and cancellation terms. In many cases, clients pay a deposit up front with the balance due before or at embarkation. The charter agreement outlines liability, insurance, and safety obligations, as well as required documentation and any local regulations.

Regulatory and safety considerations. Charters must comply with applicable flag-state and local safety regulations. Crews are typically trained and certified to operate the vessel, and safety equipment such as life jackets, liferafts, fire extinguishers, and communication gear is provided with the charter.

Costs and markets. Price varies by vessel type, size, season, and itinerary. Additional costs may include fuel, port fees, provisioning, docking, crew gratuities, and taxes.
