Blöndun

Blöndun is the process of combining two or more substances, components, or elements to form a mixture or composite with properties that differ from those of the individual constituents. The term derives from the Icelandic verb blandast, “to mix,” with the noun form blöndun referring to the act or result of mixing.

In scientific and technical contexts, blöndun describes the creation of mixtures in chemistry, materials science, and related fields. Substances may form homogeneous mixtures (solutions) in which components are distributed uniformly, or heterogeneous mixtures in which distinct phases remain visible. The outcome depends on factors such as temperature, pressure, particle size, solubility, and chemical compatibility. Methods of mixing include stirring, shaking, milling, emulsification, and phase dispersion, often aided by mechanical or chemical means.
