Bláæðakerfi

Bláæðakerfi is the Icelandic term for the venous system, which is a part of the circulatory system. It is responsible for transporting deoxygenated blood from the various organs and tissues of the body back to the heart. This contrasts with the arterial system, which carries oxygenated blood away from the heart.

The venous system consists of a network of veins, venules, and larger venous structures. Veins are vessels with thinner walls and less muscle than arteries, as they operate under lower pressure. Many veins, particularly in the limbs, contain valves. These flap-like structures prevent the backflow of blood, ensuring that it continues to move towards the heart, especially against the force of gravity.

The deoxygenated blood collected by the venous system is rich in carbon dioxide and other metabolic waste products. This blood returns to the right side of the heart, where it is then pumped to the lungs for oxygenation. In the lungs, carbon dioxide is released, and fresh oxygen is picked up, after which the oxygenated blood returns to the left side of the heart to be circulated throughout the body.

The function of the bláæðakerfi is crucial for maintaining homeostasis within the body, facilitating the removal of waste products and the delivery of essential substances to the heart and lungs. Any disruption to the venous system, such as blockages or valve malfunctions, can lead to various health issues.
