Blokkvarmere (block heating systems) are a form of centralized heating used in multi-unit residential blocks in several Nordic countries. In these arrangements a single central plant provides heat to all dwellings within a block or building through a shared network of pipes. The system is typically distinct from a municipal district heating network, though it may interface with larger systems in some cases.

Operation and components: A blokkvarme facility usually includes a central boiler room or heat source, which may run on natural gas, oil, biomass, electricity, or other fuels. Heat is distributed via a network of insulated pipes to heat exchangers or substations in individual units, delivering hot water or hot water with radiators or underfloor heating. Each dwelling is metered so that heat consumption can be allocated to the resident or tenant, and controls at the substation regulate supply to maintain comfort levels.

Ownership and economics: The system is commonly owned by a housing association, cooperative, or property management company rather than by a municipal utility. Costs are typically charged as a monthly heat fee based on measured consumption. The centralized nature of blokkvarmere can offer economies of scale and simplified maintenance, but it creates a single point of failure and reduces the degree of individual control over heating.

Context and trends: Blokkvarmere were widely used in mid- to late-20th-century housing developments in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.
