These issues can arise from abnormalities in red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, or plasma. Red blood cell disorders, such as anemia and polycythemia, disrupt the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Anemia occurs when there are too few red blood cells or insufficient hemoglobin, leading to fatigue and weakness. Polycythemia, conversely, involves an overproduction of red blood cells, which can thicken the blood and increase the risk of clotting.

White blood cell disorders can impact the immune system. Leukemias and lymphomas are cancers of the white blood cells, characterized by uncontrolled proliferation and accumulation of abnormal white blood cells. Conversely, leukopenia refers to a deficiency in white blood cells, making individuals more susceptible to infections. Platelet disorders affect blood clotting. Thrombocytopenia, a low platelet count, can lead to excessive bleeding, while thrombocytosis, a high platelet count, can increase the risk of blood clots. Plasma disorders, though less common, can involve issues with the fluid component of blood, affecting its ability to transport nutrients, hormones, and waste products. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests, bone marrow biopsies, and imaging studies. Treatment strategies vary widely depending on the specific condition and may include medications, blood transfusions, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or stem cell transplantation.
