Blickachsen

Blickachsen is an international outdoor sculpture exhibition in Germany. The project presents contemporary sculpture along a walkable route that connects public spaces, parks, and streets within a host town or region. Initiated in the 1990s, Blickachsen is organized on a biennial cycle by a cultural association or foundation with support from local authorities and sponsors. The name Blickachsen translates roughly as "line of sight" or "view axis," reflecting the way artworks are viewed in relation to their surroundings and to one another along the route. Works featured at Blickachsen are typically site-specific or specifically chosen to interact with the urban or landscape context, and they include pieces by both established and emerging international sculptors. The program often combines sculpture installations with public programming such as guided walks, artist talks, family workshops, and educational activities, aiming to make contemporary sculpture accessible to a broad audience. Past editions have varied in scope and location, with routes that circulate through city centers, parks, and peri-urban landscapes. Blickachsen has contributed to the development of public art discourse in Germany and has served to attract visitors and stimulate cultural tourism in hosting communities.
