Biztonságkritikus refers to systems, components, or processes where failure or malfunction could lead to significant adverse consequences. These consequences can range from severe financial loss and damage to reputation to, in the most extreme cases, loss of life or serious injury. The term emphasizes the paramount importance of reliability, robustness, and correctness in the design, development, testing, and operation of such entities.

In many industries, safety-critical systems are subject to stringent regulatory oversight and demanding certification processes. Examples can be found in aviation, where flight control systems are safety-critical; in healthcare, where medical devices like pacemakers must be highly reliable; and in the automotive sector, where braking systems are designed to prevent catastrophic failures. Nuclear power plants also rely on numerous safety-critical systems to prevent radioactive releases.

The development of safety-critical systems often involves employing rigorous engineering methodologies, extensive testing under various conditions, and the use of fault-tolerant architectures.
