Bisontes

Bisontes, commonly known as bison, are large bovine mammals native to North America and Europe. The American bison, distinguished by its massive hump and shaggy mane, historically roamed the Great Plains in vast herds. European bison, or wisent, are slightly taller and more slender with longer horns. These herbivores are well-adapted to their environments, with thick coats protecting them from harsh weather.

The American bison played a crucial role in the ecosystem of the North American prairies, influencing vegetation patterns through grazing and trampling. Their decline in the 19th century, due to overhunting and habitat loss, was a significant ecological and cultural event. Conservation efforts in the 20th century have led to a recovery of bison populations, though they remain a protected species in many areas.

Bison are social animals, living in herds that can range in size from a few individuals to hundreds or even thousands. Their diet consists primarily of grasses and sedges. Despite their immense size and strength, bison are generally docile unless provoked or threatened, particularly during the mating season or when protecting young.
