Biotoote

Biotoote is a Finnish term for a biological product used in agriculture, horticulture, or forestry. These products are derived from living organisms or their parts and are intended to enhance crop growth, protect against pests and diseases, or improve soil health while reducing reliance on conventional chemical inputs.

Biotootte types include biofertilizers, which contain microbial inoculants that fix atmospheric nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus, or improve nutrient uptake; biopesticides, which are microbial or biochemical agents that control targeted pests or pathogens; and biostimulants, which may consist of microbes or natural substances that promote growth or stress tolerance.

Applications span field crops, fruits, vegetables, and greenhouse systems. They are commonly applied as seed coatings, soil or root inoculants, foliar sprays, or irrigation additives, depending on the product and crop requirements.

Benefits include reduced chemical inputs, improved soil microbial activity, and potential enhancements to yield stability. Limitations involve variable effectiveness due to environmental conditions, crop specificity, formulation sensitivity to temperature, and often higher cost or shorter shelf life compared with some conventional products.

Biotoote products are subject to regulatory oversight in many regions to ensure safety for people and the environment. Manufacturers must provide product data, labeling, and quality controls in accordance with national and, where applicable, EU regulations.
