Biopsipunch

Biopsipunch is a medical instrument used to obtain a cylindrical tissue sample from the skin or mucous membranes for histopathological analysis. The device typically features a sharp circular blade at the end of a handle, forming a hollow punch. When the blade is rotated and advanced perpendicular to the surface, a core of tissue is excised and lifted out for examination.

Sizes commonly range from 1 to 6 millimeters in diameter, with larger punches available for specific clinical needs. Biopsipunches are widely used in dermatology to evaluate pigmented lesions, inflammatory conditions, infections, and suspected skin cancers.

Procedure overview: The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sterile technique. After preparing the site, the punch is aligned perpendicular to the lesion and rotated to cut through the epidermis and dermis, producing a cylindrical specimen. The tissue plug is removed with forceps and placed into a fixative, typically formalin, for pathology. Depending on the size, the wound may be left to heal by secondary intention or closed with sutures.

Post-procedure care: A dressing is applied, and standard wound-care instructions are given to minimize infection and scarring. Potential complications include bleeding, infection, scarring, and temporary pigmentary changes.

Alternatives and considerations: Shave biopsy or excisional biopsy may be chosen based on lesion characteristics, depth, and diagnostic needs. Modern punches are commonly made of stainless steel and can be disposable or reusable after proper sterilization.
