Biophysically

Biophysically is an adverb used to describe the manner in which a biological phenomenon or analysis is approached from the perspective of biophysics. It denotes that physics-based principles, models, measurements, or interpretations are applied to understand biological systems.

Rooted in biophysics, a field combining physics and biology, the term is used when researchers emphasize quantitative, mechanistic explanations of processes such as protein folding, membrane transport, ion channel dynamics, molecular interactions, and cellular mechanics. Methods commonly described as biophysical include spectroscopy, calorimetry, fluorescence techniques, X-ray and neutron scattering, as well as computational modeling and molecular dynamics; measurements and inferences are often described as biophysically derived or biophysically constrained.

In discourse, biophysically may contrast with approaches that are purely descriptive, phenomenological, or qualitative, highlighting that results are interpreted through physical laws and quantitative parameters. The phrase also appears in discussions of model plausibility, for example “biophysically plausible” models that respect known physical constraints such as thermodynamics and kinetics.
