Biojalostus

Biojalostus, also known as biorefining, is a concept and process that aims to produce a spectrum of value-added products from biomass. Similar to how a petroleum refinery processes crude oil into various fuels and chemicals, a biorefinery utilizes biological feedstock to generate biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials. The primary goal is to maximize the utilization of biomass resources, transforming renewable raw materials like agricultural residues, forest waste, algae, and dedicated energy crops into a diverse range of products.

The process typically involves several stages. Pre-treatment is often necessary to break down complex biomass structures, making them more accessible for subsequent conversion. This can include physical, chemical, or biological methods. Following pre-treatment, various conversion technologies are employed, such as fermentation, enzymatic hydrolysis, gasification, or thermochemical processes. These methods convert the biomass components, like carbohydrates, lignin, and lipids, into intermediate products. These intermediates are then further processed and purified to yield final products.
