Bioindikaattorit, or bioindicators, are living organisms or biological processes that can be used to assess the quality of the environment. These organisms are particularly sensitive to changes in their surroundings, such as pollution, temperature fluctuations, or habitat degradation. By observing their presence, absence, abundance, or physiological state, scientists can infer the health of an ecosystem.

Commonly used bioindicators include lichens, which are sensitive to air pollution, and certain species of aquatic insects, whose presence or absence indicates water quality. Fish populations can also serve as bioindicators, with declining numbers or deformities suggesting environmental stress. Even microscopic organisms like bacteria and algae can be used to monitor water and soil conditions.

The principle behind bioindication is that organisms respond predictably to environmental stressors. If a pollutant is introduced into an environment, sensitive species will be negatively affected, potentially dying off or showing signs of distress. Conversely, the presence of species that thrive in specific conditions can indicate a healthy and stable environment.

Bioindikaattorit offer several advantages. They are often cost-effective and can provide a more holistic assessment of environmental health than laboratory tests alone. They integrate the effects of various environmental factors over time, offering a long-term perspective. Their use is crucial in environmental monitoring, conservation efforts, and impact assessments.
