Bildeverifisering, also known as image verification or image authentication, refers to the process of confirming the authenticity and integrity of a digital image. This is crucial in various fields, including journalism, law enforcement, historical research, and digital forensics, where the accuracy of visual information can have significant consequences. The primary goal is to determine if an image has been manipulated, altered, or if it is genuine and represents the event or subject it purports to depict.

Several techniques are employed in bildeverifisering. These can include analyzing the image's metadata, which may contain information about the camera, date, time, and location of capture. However, metadata is easily altered, making it an unreliable sole indicator of authenticity. The consistency of noise patterns within an image can also be examined, as artificial noise or the removal of existing noise can be indicative of tampering. Furthermore, comparing an image to known genuine versions or other related evidence can help establish its credibility. The challenge in bildeverifisering lies in the continuous advancement of digital manipulation tools, making it an ongoing technological arms race between those who create fakes and those who develop methods to detect them.
