It signals similarity in certain characteristics but remains non-taxonomic and provisional.

Common usage notes that bilaterianlike conditions may involve bilateral symmetry, a defined anterior-posterior axis, or signs of organized tissue layers and early organization. However, the presence of such traits is not sufficient on its own to classify an organism as a bilaterian, since convergent or ancestral traits can occur in non-bilaterian groups as well. The term is often applied when evidence is partial, ambiguous, or debated, such as fossils with symmetric body plans or embryos showing regionalization that resembles early bilaterian development.

In practice, bilaterianlike descriptions appear in discussions of the early evolution of animals, the transition from simple body plans to more complex, segmented, and organ-bearing forms, and in the interpretation of enigmatic Ediacaran fossils. In comparative genomics or developmental biology, the label may be used to describe gene expression patterns or regulatory networks that resemble bilaterian programs, while recognizing that functional equivalence has not been established.

Limitations of the term include its non-species status and the potential for misinterpretation as implying close phylogenetic relationships.
