Bifueljärjestelmä

Bifueljärjestelmä is a Finnish term referring to a bifuel system, a technology that allows a vehicle to run on two different types of fuel. Typically, these systems are designed for internal combustion engines and enable them to operate on a primary fuel, such as gasoline or diesel, and a secondary alternative fuel, most commonly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG).

The core of a bifuel system involves modifying the engine's fuel delivery and control systems. This usually includes adding an additional fuel tank, injectors or a vaporizer for the alternative fuel, and an electronic control unit (ECU) that manages the switch between fuels. The driver can typically select which fuel to use, or the system may automatically switch based on engine conditions or pre-set parameters.

Bifuel systems offer several advantages. They can reduce fuel costs due to the often lower price of alternative fuels. They can also contribute to lower emissions, as LPG and CNG generally produce fewer harmful pollutants than traditional gasoline or diesel. Furthermore, the dual-fuel capability provides operational flexibility, allowing drivers to choose the most economical or readily available fuel.

However, bifuel systems also have drawbacks. The initial installation cost can be significant, and the retrofitting process may reduce available cargo space due to the additional fuel tanks. The performance of the vehicle might also be slightly affected when running on the alternative fuel, although modern systems aim to minimize this impact. Maintenance requirements are also increased due to the added complexity of the dual-fuel setup. Bifuel technology is a practical solution for extending the range and reducing the environmental impact of vehicles by utilizing a wider range of fuel options.
