Identifiers like ISBNs and DOIs help disambiguate works and link related resources. Citation conventions (APA, MLA, Chicago) guide how items are referenced in scholarly writing. Bibliographic databases and library catalogs organize records to aid discovery, verification, and scholarly citation.

Historically, bibliography arose from early scholarship that cataloged and described books, evolving alongside libraries, printing, and modern information science. Today, bibliografian intersects with library science, digital humanities, and bibliometrics, playing a central role in research practices, cultural preservation, and the accessibility of scholarly knowledge.
