BiPAPkoneet, an abbreviation for Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure machines, are a type of non-invasive ventilation device used to treat various respiratory conditions. These machines deliver air at two different pressure levels: a higher pressure when the patient inhales and a lower pressure when they exhale. This mechanism helps to keep the airways open and ensures adequate airflow, thereby improving breathing.

BiPAP therapy is commonly prescribed for conditions such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and certain neuromuscular disorders. In OSA, the dual pressure prevents the collapse of the upper airway during sleep. For patients with COPD, BiPAP can help reduce the work of breathing and improve oxygenation.

The device consists of a main unit that generates the pressurized air, a flexible tubing system, and a mask that fits comfortably over the nose and mouth, or just the nose. Patients are typically prescribed a specific pressure setting tailored to their individual needs by a healthcare professional. The effectiveness of BiPAP therapy is often monitored through patient compliance and, in some cases, overnight sleep studies. While generally safe and effective, potential side effects can include dry mouth, nasal irritation, or discomfort from the mask.
