Beurkundeters

Beurkundeters is a term used to describe individuals authorized to perform notarial acts—signing, certifying, and authenticating documents to give them legal effect. In many jurisdictions the standard English equivalent is notary or notary public; Beurkundeter is more typical in German-language contexts and may be used in multilingual legal texts to refer to the official who performs the act of Beurkundung (notarization).

Duties typically include drafting or reviewing legal documents, verifying the identities of signatories, observing legal formalities, witnessing signatures, and ensuring that acts comply with applicable law. They may also keep records, issue certified copies, and provide neutral, impartial authentication.

Legal framework varies by jurisdiction. In many German-speaking countries, a notary (Notar) is a state-appointed public official with specialized legal training, authorized to draft and certify deeds, wills, real estate transfers, corporate documents, and long-term contracts. Notaries may also advise on form and validity and ensure confidentiality. In civil-law systems, the notary's role is to convert private agreements into public documents with probative force. In contrast, common-law systems rely more on solicitors, conveyancers, or registries, and the role of a notary differs in scope.

Notaries are distinct from witnesses or regular attorneys in many jurisdictions; their authority derives from public office rather than client advocacy.
