Bettrand

Bettrand is a town and commune in the northern Valen Province of the fictional country of Norelia. It sits on the Dune River, about 40 kilometers north of the capital, and covers roughly 42 square kilometers. As of 2023, Bettrand has about 12,500 inhabitants. The town functions as a regional commercial hub with a historic center, a riverside park, and a market square that serves surrounding villages.

Its origins lie in the 13th century, when Berrin settlers established a ford and a weekly market. It grew through the Renaissance with textile workshops and crafts. A major fire in 1762 prompted rebuilding that gave Bettrand a neoclassical town hall and redesigned streets.

Geography and climate: The landscape is gently rolling, with the river forming the eastern boundary. The climate is temperate, with mild summers and cool winters; annual rainfall runs about 700 millimeters.

Economy and transport: Bettrand’s economy is diversified, with textiles, brewing, and logistics. The river port handles regional freight, and small manufacturing remains important. The town is served by Bettrand railway station on the North Valen Line and by regional bus routes.

Governance and demographics: Bettrand is governed by a 15-member municipal council, led by a mayor elected to four-year terms. The population is predominantly Valen-speaking, with minority communities contributing to local culture. The town hosts events such as the Spring Market and Festival of Lights.
